One Hit, Bad For Me refers to a series of lip dubs and memes referencing the AJR song "Weak," which is about resisting urges. The song was popularized as the subject of lip dubs on TikTok as early as 2021 and was further popularized as a memetic audio in 2023 and 2024, with many videos depicting someone being tempted by something and refusing it while lip dubbing to the song. In 2024, a brainrot parody of the song known as "Edging, Bad for Me" was popularized as a meme by content creators Rizz Records.

Origin

On September 16th, 2016, AJR released the song "Weak," which is about resisting urges.^[1] A music video for the song was later released on AJR's YouTube^[2] channel on March 9th, 2017, garnering over 86 million views in seven years.

One of the earliest known viral lip dubs to the song was posted by TikToker^[3] @jordybouletviau on May 12th, 2021, garnering over 2.1 million views in three years (shown below).

The song became the further subject of lip dubs and memes on TikTok throughout 2023 and 2024.

On May 22nd, 2024, TikToker^[4] @socmacoc4ever posted a slideshow to the song consisting of wolf images with lyrics parodying the original and referencing gen alpha slang terms, garnering over 5.5 million views in three months. On May 25th, TikToker^[5] @jiggle_pickle69 posted a similar slideshow that gained over 1.6 million views in the same span of time (shown below).

Around the same time, TikTokers began posting ironic lip dub videos in which they're shown refusing something, like a vape, phone, nicotine, etc. while the lyrics play, then dance or lip dub to the song. For example, on August 5th, TikToker^[6] @bxizjzizjeidnkd posted a video like this that gained over 1.4 million views in three weeks.

On the same day, the Rizz Records YouTube^[7] channel posted a meme similar to the we can go gyatt for gyatt format in which a brainrot version of the song, consisting of lyrics referencing edging,, gooning and jelqing, plays as an AI model for Mordecai from Regular Show lip dubs and performs over the song, garnering over 235,000 views in three weeks.

The YouTuber^[8]^[9]^[10] posted further examples of the meme over the following days in which the character is swapped, with some popular examples including CaseOh, SpongeBob and a Minecraft golem.

On August 26th, X^[11] user @squirtledotcom posted a video of themselves scrolling through the Rizz Records YouTube Shorts page and receiving numerous examples of the meme, writing, "I CAN’T ESCAPE," garnering over 29,000 likes and 3,200 reposts in two days.
