About
Olivia Wilde's Salad Dressing refers to memes surrounding a viral story and controversy about Don't Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde and her alleged affair with lead actor and pop star Harry Styles. According to an interview with the nanny of Wilde and her husband Jason Sudeikis, Sudeikis became aware of the rumored affair and had an argument with Wilde over her making a special, signature salad dressing for Styles. This led to a series of memes based on the supposedly seductive power of Wilde's salad dressing in October 2022.
Origin
On October 17th, 2022, The Daily Mail[1] posted an interview with Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis' nanny. In the interview, the nanny alleges Sudeikis uncovered Wilde and Styles' affair and became incensed when he saw her making a signature salad dressing for the pop star, to the point where he laid in front of her car to prevent her from driving it to him.
Memes about Wilde's salad dressing began appearing shortly after the article was published. For example, Twitter user @trinawatters[2] posted a picture of Smudge the Cat, gaining over 410 retweets and 7,800 likes in four days (shown below).
Spread
The story prompted many jokes about the supposed power of Wilde's salad and the scene described by the nanny. For example, on October 18th, 2022, Twitter user @realadamfrancis[4] posted a Joker meme about the incident (shown below, left). On October 17th, Twitter user @fourlokolou[5] also posted a joke about the story using a screenshot from iCarly, gaining over 3,100 retweets and 46,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).
As the story was widely reported on and went viral in the following days, some speculated what could have made Wilde's salad so special. It was suspected that her salad came from a recipe she once shared with the Food Network.[5] After a day of jokes and the internet wondering what could have possibly made the salad dressing so special, Wilde appeared to post the recipe for it, which was taken from the Nora Ephron book Hearburn.[3]
