About

Good 4 U is a 2021 song by Olivia Rodrigo from her debut album Sour. It reached the top of the charts in several countries following the success of her hit single "Drivers License." The song became massively popular on TikTok in the months following its release, as well as garnering criticism over sounding like a rip-off of the pop-punk band Paramore.

Origin

On May 14th, 2021, "Good 4 U" released as the third single off Olivia Rodrigo's 2021 album Sour along with a music video (shown below). The song, performed in a pop-punk style, gained critical acclaim following the explosive success of "Drivers License," with over 114 million views on YouTube[1] in a month and hit the top of the Billboard charts in 15 countries, including Canada, the United States, Germany and Ireland.[2]

Well, good for you, you look happy and healthy, not me
If you ever cared to ask
Good for you, you're doin' great out there without me, baby
Like a damn sociopath
I've lost my mind, I've spent the night
Cryin' on the floor of my bathroom
But you're so unaffected, I really don't get it
But I guess good for you

Spread

On the day of the song's release, Rodrigo performed it on Saturday Night Live, with the performance being uploaded to SNL's YouTube channel on May 16th, 2021, receiving over 5.8 million views and 337,000 likes in one month (shown below).

TikTok

The song became significantly popular as an original sound on TikTok[3] and was used in over two million videos within a month of the song's release. The song is largely used as a backing track to general videos, as well as associated with a number of trends.

The most popular videos under the sound were posted by TikTokers[5][6] @yagirll_sienna and @kendralacerda1 on May 16th, and 15th respectively, garnering over 28.9 million and 48 million views respectively (shown below). Each video features the girls putting their hair in a ponytail and cutting it, a trend that a number of TikTokers have done to the song.

The main trend sees TikTokers[11][12] play out skits where one person displays arguably and over-exaggeratedly "insane" behaviors, followed by the other lip dubbing the lyrics, "like a damn sociopath" (examples shown below, left and right).

On May 19th, Dexerto[4] published a story on the song's success on TikTok.

Similarities to Paramore's "Misery Business"

Some listeners have noticed similarities between the song and pop-punk band Paramore's 2007 song "Misery Business." On May 14th, 2021, YouTuber[7] Adamusic posted a mashup of the two, garnering over 1.4 million views in a month (shown below).

On the same day, he posted a video to TikTok[8] showing the mashup, garnering over 3.7 million views in the same span of time (shown below).

The mashup gained significant attention on TikTok[9][10] as well, inspiring over 11,000 videos to use it in a month (examples shown below).
