About

The "Okay ❤️ Yay ❤️" Text Message Response refers to a series of iMessage screenshots in which one person asks the other about what's going on with (or what's the deal with) a certain event, controversy or meme topic, prompting the other to tell them not to worry about it ("Don't worry about it babe"), therefore resulting in the first text messenger to type, "Okay ❤️ Yay ❤️." The original meme was posted to Twitter in early 2021 and dealt with a stock market-related inquiry about the then-recent WallStreetBets GameStop Short Squeeze. Continuing into 2022, the original "Okay ❤️ Yay ❤️" screenshot became an exploitable template, accumulating new recaptioned variations regarding many topics, such as the Russian Invasion of Ukraine and Adam Levine's Cheating Scandal, among others.

Origin

On January 27th, 2021, Twitter[1] user chrambi tweeted a screenshot of a text conversation she had with her boyfriend in which she asked him, "what's going on with the stock market," in relation to the then-recent WallStreetBets GameStop Short Squeeze. Her boyfriend responded, "lmao, dont worry about it babe," to which she replied in two separate texts, "okay ❤️ yay ❤️." Over the course of a year and a half, the meme received roughly 173,800 likes (shown below).

Spread

Soon after the virality of chrambi's tweet, the text message concept portrayed in the screenshot gained further memetic iterations. The first known iteration was uploaded on January 28th, 2021, by Twitter[2] user suchaone, who inserted the text conversation into a lesbian version of the Boy and Girl Texting template, gaining over 460 likes in a year and a half (shown below, left). On April 21st, Instagram[3] user penls_buttler recaptioned the screenshot to reference the Looney Toons Painted Tunnel On A Wall Gag, gaining roughly 3,200 likes in a year and a half (shown below, right).

On August 17th, 2021, since-deleted Instagram user assparlor posted a recaptioned version of the original meme, replacing the words "stock market" with "Afghanistan" in relation to the 2021 Taliban Offensive in Afghanistan (shown below). The first known repost of it was uploaded by Instagram[4] page wholesome_core on August 17th, however, a repost from Instagram[5] page mememonk_ posted on August 18th earned more likes, roughly 61,000 in 13 months.

Continuing into late 2021 and early 2022, the "Okay ❤️ Yay ❤️" text message memes appeared en masse. For instance, on December 16th, 2021, Twitter[6] user empty_box_10 recaptioned Twitter user suchaone's "Boy and Girl Texting" template, instead leading with the question, "are cigarettes bad for you?" The meme received roughly 15,000 likes in nine months (shown below, left). On February 25th, 2022, Twitter[7] user trulyrick tweeted a fake iMessage conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden about what was going on in Ukraine. Over the course of seven months, the tweet received roughly 52,100 likes (shown below, right).
