October 31st vs. November 1st, also written as Me on October 31 vs. November 1, is a catchphrase used in image caption comparison memes that juxtaposes two pictures from the same person depicting their moods on Halloween and then the next day when they transition to being in the Christmas or holiday spirit. While somewhat less well-known than the sister trend of September 30th vs. October 1st, the meme series has steadily grown in usage year after year since the mid-2010s.

Origin

In 2015, an unknown Tumblr user uploaded a picture in which a game screenshot from the dancing spinoff of Persona 4 was used to show the entire cast dressed for Halloween on October 31st, then dressed for Christmas on November 1st. Though the original post has since been lost, the earliest reupload is found on Funnyjunk by the user Aznzeus on November 1st, 2017,^[1] where it gained over 860 upvotes in five years (shown below).

Spread

Over the following years, additional variants using the same comparison format with the phrasal caption and two images continued to spread online. For example, on November 1st, 2018, the Twitter account Wolgang^[2] uploaded a meme (since-deleted) using the character Salem from the live-action version of Sabrina The Teenage Witch to represent his mood changing from spooky ghost to eating donuts in a Santa hat (shown below).

Two years later, on October 31st, 2019, Redditor IgnantClapTrap^[3] uploaded a Padoru meme to the /r/Animemes subreddit in which they spent October 1-30 being spooky, dressing up for Halloween, then immediately switching to Santa on November 1st, gaining over 9,000 upvotes in three years (shown below).
