About
Ocean Man is a song by the alternative music band Ween. Following its use in the final scene of the Spongebob Squarepants movie, the song began appearing in remix videos on iFunny, Vine and YouTube as memes including it spread online. A copypasta using the lyrics from "Ocean Man" combined with emojis also trended in the following years.
Origin
"Ocean Man" was released on June 24th, 1997 by Ween as the second single from their sixth studio album, The Mollusk. It was praised by AllMusic as an example of how Ween's "array of silly jokes and musical parody is richer and more diverse than most of its alternative rock contemporaries"[3] along with serving as a creative inspiration for Spongebob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg in creating the show.[1]
Spread
The song gained more widespread, mainstream exposure when it was used in the final scene of The Spongebob Squarepants Movie in 2004, where Spongebob jumps for joy after becoming the manager of the new Krusty Krab 2 restaurant (shown below).
In late 2015 and early 2016, "Ocean Man" became a popular musical punchline in Vine videos. On January 2nd, 2016, a compilation of "Ocean Man" Vines was uploaded to YouTube, gaining over 450,000 views (shown below).
On August 12th, 2016, Redditor A_Soggy_Cactus posted the copypasta version of the song to the subreddit /r/copypasta,[4] receiving 100 upvotes in roughly seven years (seen below).
