About

Oblivious Suburban Mom is an advice-animal image macro series portraying a mother who is unaware of just exactly what activities her children are partaking in. Unlike Sheltering Suburban Mom, Oblivious Suburban Mom is characterized as an optimistic, trusting parent completely ignorant her child's delinquent behaviors.

Origin

The base photo was used to advertise jeans sold at retailers JCPenny and later, K-Mart[12][13], some time previous to May 2009.[1] The stock image was used again in May 2011 in an article on Cougar Life Review.[3] Soon after this post, the first instance of the image macro was created on QuickMeme[2] in early July 2011.

Spread

The image macro made its first appearance on Reddit[4] in /r/AdviceAnimals on July 5th, 2011. On July 8th 2011, the images were added to voting site Ranker[5], whose link was posted to Digg[6] on the 13th. Instances began appearing on Tumblr as early as July 10th[7] and as a Tumblr tag[8] by July 15th. A compilation was posted to FunnyJunk[9] on July 16th. The macro saw a resurgence in November 2011 when compilations were posted to eBaum's World[10] and Buzzfeed.[11]
