About

Now That We're Men refers to a series of jokes, references and remix videos based on the song "Now That We're Men" from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Origin

On November 14th, 2004, Nickelodeon released The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.^[1] In the film, the characters SpongeBob and Patrick sing a song entitled "Now That We're Men."

Spread

The earliest instance of the song being used online occured on May 27th, 2006, when YouTuber^[2] Alishab1191 posted a video of a boy singing and dancing to the song (shown below, left). The video received more than 1,000 views in 11 years. Later that year, YouTuber^[3] EternalSilverFlame dubbed the song over clips from the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The post (shown below, right) received more than 1,000 views.

On February 12th, 2010, YouTuber^[4] Peter Joseph posted a video entitled "Now That were Men in G major". Within seven years, the video (shown below) received more than 81,000 views.

On April 9th, 2017, Redditor ^[5] chooseauniqueusernaz posted a three panel meme featuring scenes from Titanic, The Fast and the Furious and The SpongeBob Movie (shown below, left). The post received more than 2,200 points (97% upvoted) with in seven months.

Later that year, on November 9th, Redditor^[6] FootBa11 a four-pane image featuring screenshots and lyrics from the song. The final pane reads, "I make 30 more cents an hour for the same job." The post (shown below, right) received more than 1,100 points (91% upvoted) in one day

Intro Edits

On June 10th, 2019, Twitter user @iloveicees24 posted a short clip of the track's introduction with the music replaced by a brief reference to the anime K-On! (shown below, top). However, it was not until July 27th, 2019, when Twitter user @mayhem_crimson posted a short clip of the track's introduction but with the music replaced by CaptainSparklez' Revenge, that the joke became more popular (shown below, bottom). The tweet gained over 200 retweets and 600 likes. (shown below, bottom).

The following day, Twitter user @CartoonFan18 tweeted a similar clip using the theme song from American Dad, gaining over 840 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below, top). CartoonFan18's clip inspired dozens more parodies to appear on Twitter over the following two days. In the replies to his post, several users posted their version of the meme. User @spindash2002 tweeted an example using the music from Sonic the Hedgehog, gaining over 150 retweets and 390 likes (shown below, bottom).
