The cover was released in June 2022 and the animation trend became popularized on YouTube and TikTok around June 2023. The animations typically depict characters from various fandoms lip dubbing to the lyrics, which are displayed in a stylized manner on-screen.

On June 3rd, 2022, the song "HEAVEN SAYS" was released by musical artist "chart," with the YouTube[1] upload garnering over 262,000 views in a year. On June 9th, YouTuber[2] GamePlayah released a cover of the song meant to make the lyrical content clearer, garnering over 344,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, left and right). The song samples a speak and spell toy throughout, a children's toy that asks players to spell a given word, then type it out.[3]

YouTubers began posting animation memes set to the song as early as February 2023, although the first user to do so is unconfirmed. The earliest known example was posted by YouTuber[4] The Doctor on February 13th, 2023, garnering over 186,000 views in five months (shown below).

Spread

YouTubers continued to upload animation memes set to the song over the following months. On May 29th, 2023, YouTuber[5] Alfazoing posted a meme that gained over 124,000 views in two months (shown below, left). On June 25th, YouTuber[6] mokkagren posted a video that gained over 112,000 views in a month (shown below, right).

Similar animation memes became increasingly popularized on TikTok in July 2023. On July 12th, TikToker[7] @tobiasazaz3l posted an edit using footage from Steven Universe that gained over 125,000 views in a week (shown below).

On July 16th, TikToker[8] @artzyyedits posted an animation to the song that gained over 700,000 views in two days (shown below, left). On July 17th, TikToker[9] @moonstarstorm15 posted an animation based on the video game FAITH: The Unholy Trinity, garnering over 900,000 views in a day (shown below, right).
