Nothing To Smile About In My Life refers to a series of exploitable redraw memes based on a 2019 Facebook post where a man changes his profile picture to a photo of himself frowning, one user commenting, "a smile might be good," the man responding, "Nothing to smile about in my life." The post was shared on Reddit in October 2020 and went viral, inspiring people to redraw it with new characters.

Origin

On November 18th, 2019, Facebook^[1] user Darren Young changed his profile picture to a photo of himself frowning. Joy Young responded, "a smile might be good," and Darren replied back, "Nothing to smile about in my life." A screenshot of the exchange with the names censored was posted to /r/2meirl4meirl^[2] on October 4th, 2020, gaining over 38,800 upvotes in two years (shown below). This is the earliest known time the screenshot was posted.

The meme went viral through reposts and inspired redraws over the following years. On October 14th, 2020, Tumblr^[3] user eyezehuhh posted a redraw of the meme replacing the profile photo with Shadow the Hedgehog, gaining over 3,700 notes in two years (shown below).

The meme increased in virality throughout 2021. On March 3rd, 2021, Redditor u/LateComerFangirl1 posted a version of the meme using Snape from the Harry Potter franchise to /r/harrypotter,^[4] gaining roughly 100 upvotes in a year (shown below). The meme was reposted to Instagram^[5] page _the_boy_who_lived._ on March 25th, gaining over 6,000 likes in a comparable span of time. On July 26th, Instagram^[6] user genshin.era posted a version of the meme using a Genshin Impact character, gaining over 34,000 likes in 11 months. On August 11th, Facebook^[7] page nonexistent posted the original meme, gaining over 25,000 reactions and 64,000 shares in 10 months.

On November 8th, Instagram^[8] page monkey.posting posted a version of the meme featuring a monkey, gaining over 22,100 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On March 6th, 2022, Instagram^[9] page 5.36am posted a version of the meme referencing musician The Weeknd, gaining over 50,000 likes in three months (shown below, right).
