About

Not Liking X Is A Character Flaw is a snowclone phrase used primarily on Twitter to show support for a person or character, typically used either on its own or alongside an image of said character. The phrase has been utilized on Twitter since at least 2010, becoming popular in June 2021 and inspiring a number of viral tweets.

Origin

It's unknown where exactly the phrase first started. The earliest use of it on Twitter[1] dates back to March 30th, 2010, in a post reading, "not liking the office is a character flaw." The phrase was used with increasing frequency on Twitter[2][3] over the following years, applied to various celebrities and characters (examples shown below).

Spread

The phrase continued to increase in popularity over the course of the next 11 years, seeing a significant boost in popularity around June 2021. On June 13th, 2021, Twitter[4] user NicholasMcCart5 posted, "Not liking Mariah Carey is a character flaw," along with a photo of Carey, garnering over 2,700 likes and 420 retweets in three days (shown below).

The trend took off over the next three days as users altered the phrasing to show their love for various people and characters, many without adding photographs. For example, on that day, Twitter[5] user @sadhotgirI posted, "not liking megan thee stallion is a character flaw i’m afraid," garnering over 33,700 likes and 5,700 retweets in two days.

On June 14th, Twitter[6][7] users @TheSpearsRoom and @DuganAmanda made variations of the trend referencing Britney Spears and David Lynch, garnering over 1,600 likes on the former and 1,500 on the latter in two days (shown below, left and right).

On June 15th, StayHipp[8] posted an article on the trend.
