About
"Nod to the Rhythm" refers to a song by musician Das Anders used to promote an app where one can upload a photo and through digital manipulation make it appear as though the photo is nodding along to the song. The site has inspired many variations featuring different characters.
Origin
In late January, 2018, musician Das Anders created NodToTheRhythm.com,[1] a website where one can upload a photo and watch it "nod along" to the automatically-playing titular song. While the date of the site's creation is unclear, the earliest known mention of the site comes in a YouTube video about "pointless websites" posted January 20th, 2018 (shown below).
On the 27th, the channel Too Good Not to Watch uploaded footage of an old man moving to the song to show off the software (shown below).
Spread
In the following days, more animations using the software appeared on YouTube. An edit featuring Pope John Paul II gained over 5,700 views (shown below, left). Another featuring a digitally altered photo of a man gained 3,200 views (shown below, right).
The meme has grown popular on Reddit, where several creators have uploaded edits featuring different characters. For example, an edit featuring Ben Swolo gained 15 upvotes.[3] An edit featuring a League of Legends bard gained 49 upvotes. The Daily Dot[2] covered the videos on February 6th, 2018.
