No, This Isn't How You're Supposed to Play the Game is a quote from Super Smash Brothers director Masahiro Sakurai stated while he explained the "Home Run Contest" feature in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. The quote became used as a meme in reaction images.
On September 4th, 2019, Masahiro Sakurai held a Nintendo Direct to talk about Super Smash Brothers Ultimate's new DLC fighter, Banjo and Kazooie, as well as some new features added to the game, such as the Home Run Contest. While discussing the two-player Home Run Contest mode, he corrected himself while explaining two fighters can play the mode by stating, "No, this isn't how you're supposed to play the game! I mean two friends can play together, not one person playing as two characters" (shown below).
The quote quickly became the subject of jokes on Reddit. One of the earliest known examples of the meme appeared on September 7th, 2019 in /r/dankmemes,[2] posted by illaisterngaining over 23,000 points (shown below, left). On September 12th, 2019 an anti-meme version was posted /r/antimeme,[1] though it gained 13 points (shown below, right).
