No Simp September refers to a semi-ironic social media challenge which involves the male participants giving up any behavior characteristic of simping during the month of September, which includes actions such as donating money to "boob" streamers and e-girls and liking or commenting on posts which value largely relies on presence of a female in them. The challenge references No Nut November and its precursor No-Shave November.

Origin

While the first use of the phrase "No Simp September" as the parody of No Nut November occured earlier,^[1] No Simp September was not considered as a potential monthy challenge until mid-July 2020. On July 23rd, 2020, TikTok^[2] user @albaniantweetreated posted the earliest discovered viral clip announcing the launch of No Simp September in September 2020. The clip received over 1.2 million views and 240,000 likes in two months. However, circumstantial evidence^[3] indicates that TikToks about No Simp September may have first appeared in May 2020.

Spread

During August 2020, TikToks users posted multiple viral videos spreading the news of the upcoming challenge and suggesting potential rules for it. For example, on August 19th, 2020, TikTok^[4] user ratbasterd posted a TikTok that gained over 438,500 likes and 72,900 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). On August 21st, TikTok user dinapovs posted a TikTok^[5] in which she rallied female users of the app to "make them simp." The post received over 1.8 million views and 383,900 likes in ten days (shown below, right).

Starting in mid-August 2020, the posts about the challenge received further spread online outside of TikTok, with viral posts appearing on Instagram and Twitter. On August 3rd, Redditor Bruhbot42069 created /r/NoSimpSeptember^[6] subreddit which gained over 830 subscribers in one month.

Starting approximately at 9am EST September 2020, the phrase "No Simp September started trending on Twitter, continuing to trend for several hours on that day.^[7]

No Simp September Rules

While no canonical version of rules for the No Simp September exists, multiple users on TikTok and other platforms came up with potential rules for the challenge, including the male participants refusing to act subservient to females in hopes of gaining their favor, abstaining from donating money to "boob" streamers, ignoring social media posts value of which largely stems from presence of a female in them, and avoiding other actions generally associated with simping.

On August 3rd, Redditor^[8] Bruhbot42069 posted a ruleset for the challenge that has since been quoted by multiple news outlets, including eBaum's World^[9] and HITC.^[10]
