Origin

On October 11th, 2017, Twitter user @tdubs23 posted a Snapchat video titled "No pomegranates," featuring footage of Dr. Jane Martino, a psychology professor at Des Moines Area Community College in Des Moines, Iowa, loudly yelling about pomegranate fruits during a lecture at the Des Moines Area Community College (shown below). Within five days, the tweet received more than 181,000 likes and 79,300 retweets.


Spread

On October 12th, 2017, YouTuber Jan N reuploaded the video, which garnered more than 1.5 million views and 8,100 comments over the next four days.[3] That day, Redditor MapleLeafsFan3 submitted the video to /r/youtubehaiku,[1] where it received upwards of 19,700 points (93% upvoted) and 550 comments within four days. Also on October 12th, Twitter user @deeejaaay25 tweeted a video of Martino performing a similar rant in a different class (shown below). Shortly after, @deeejaaay25[2] explanation that the video was taken during a developmental psychology class on teaching young children "to dislike/like something" (shown below).


That same day, the International Business Times[4] published an article about the viral video, noting that Martino had confirmed she was "leading the class in an exercise about the word 'no'." Twitter user @On October 13th, Redditor alienbluedit posted a photoshopped screencapture from the "No Russian" level in Call of Duty superimposed with Martino's head to /r/MemeEconomy[5] (shown below).
