It is unclear who first started the "put on the mask" trend on TikTok. One of the earliest known examples of the trend was posted by TikToker^[1] @marquiswilliams133 on April 9th, 2023, where he lip dubs to a line of dialogue spoken by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises while wearing multiple pairs of women's underwear on his face like a mask, garnering over 3.8 million views in four months (shown below).

Spread

The trend spread over the following months, seeing a significant boost in popularity in late July 2023. On July 27th, 2023, TikToker^[2] @michaxl.ax posted a video following the trend with a bra also on his face, garnering over 7.7 million views in a month (shown below, left). On August 6th, TikToker^[3] @smackmycupcake posted a video following the trend that gained over 27 million views in three weeks (shown below, right).

On August 19th, TikToker^[4] @.shakoree. posted a video following the trend that gained over 2 million views in a week (shown below).
