No Cops At Pride is a catchphrase used to criticize the persecution of the LGBTQ community by police officers. Therefore, the phrase expresses the opinion that there should be no police presence at LGBTQ Pride celebrations. Online, people have added things they want at Pride to the phrase, usually including pop culture figures people would want to see at Pride.

Origin

While the phrase has likely been used offline and within activist communities prior to its online usage, the earliest known example of the phrase online was posted by Twitter [1] user @TinyAwoo on August 1st, 2015. They tweeted, "NYPD recently ripped a gay man from his home and beat him while singing homophobic slurs. Yet we are supposed to welcome cops at Pride?? Let alone completely ignore the fact the original Pride events were rallies against police brutality against queer folk No cops at Pride." The post (shown below) received more than 10 retweets and 10 likes.

In 2018, the phrase took on greater popularity. On May 23rd, 2018, Twitter[2] user @destroyerofego tweeted, "NO COPS AT PRIDE NO COPS AT PRIDE NO COPS AT PRIDE NO COPS AT PRIDE NO COPS AT PRIDE NO COPS AT PRIDE NO COPS AT PRIDE NO COPS AT PRIDE." The post (shown below, left) received more than 6,300 retweets and 28,000 likes in less than one month.

Less than one week later, Twitter[3] user @nightfiIm tweeted, "no cops at pride just thor and a squad of buff lesbians with wide varieties of swords and daggers." The post (shown below, center) received more than 800 retweets and 2,500 likes in about two weeks and started a trend of people adding things they want at Pride.

The following day, Twitter[4] user @faketadhg tweeted, "no cops at pride just carly rae jepsen and her sword." The post (shown below, right) received more than 15,000 retweets and 63,000 in two weeks.

Less than three weeks later, Twitter[5] user @hattiesoykan tweeted, "no cops at pride just danny devito." The post (shown below) received more than 25,000 retweets and 94,000 likes in three days.

Several media outlets covered the "no cops at Pride just" meme, including The Daily Dot, [6] Them,[7] and more.
