About

No Blue Check, No Promo, Just Doing It for the Love of the Game refers to a phrasal template popularized on X / Twitter, which signifies that another user is posting something that is usually associated with engagement bait and low-effort posting but has an unmonetized account and is not promoting anything, therefore doing it "for the love of the game." Versions of the meme format have been used on X since early January 2024.

Origin

"Doing something for the love of the game" is a common idiom and slang expression meaning that something is being done purely for the pleasure of doing it rather than for money or other benefits.

On January 13th, 2024, X[1] user @boltlol2 quoted a since-deleted post by user @thatsjusthunnny, commenting, "no onlyfans no promotions simply posting this for the love of the game wow," implying that the content posted by @thatsjusthunnny was typical of those who promote their OnlyFans accounts on X. The post, which is the earliest discovered version of the meme format, (shown below) garnered over 1,200 reposts and 10,000 likes in 10 months.

Spread

Versions of the catchphrase gained initial spread on X in January 2024. For example, on January 20th, 2024, X[2] user @incognitoStunna posted a joke based on the format that received over 500 reposts and 6,000 likes in 10 months (shown below).

On June 4th, 2024, X[3] user @cagiago_ quoted a post about football made by another user, captioning it, "No blue check, he’s being stupid purely for the love of the game." The quote post (shown below) received over 1,100 reposts and 30,000 likes in five months.

The phrasal format maintained a notable presence on X / Twitter through the summer and fall of 2024.
