About
Nintendo's "Bigger Badder Bowser" Trailer refers to a commercial for the Bowser's Fury expansion in the re-release of Nintendo's Super Mario 3D World. The trailer features a much scarier, giant Bowser design and shows Mario growing in size as he prepares to take down his foe. After the trailer's release, social media users joked about stills from the trailer and compared it to the Dynamaxing mechanic in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
Origin
On January 12th, 2021, Nintendo released a trailer for the Bowser's Fury expansion of Super Mario 3D World. It shows Mario working with Bowser Jr. to solve puzzles when a giant, black Bowser with red eyes emerges. Mario, in a cat suit, grows in size in preparation to fight (shown below).
Spread
After the trailer was published, users on social media began making jokes about the intense Bowser design and other contents of the trailer. User @luulubuu[1] created an Object Labeling meme using Shredded Cheese from the Bag caption, gaining over 80 retweets and 470 likes in two hours (shown below, left). User @YaBoiVy[2] posted old fan art of Bowser and Mario that looked similar to the image in the trailer, writing, "Bowser’s Fury is this, but a game" (shown below, right).
Others noted similarities between Bowser and Mario's larger forms to the Dynamax / Gigantamax mechanic from Pokémon Sword and Shield, which allows Pokémon to grow large if they Dynamax and take a new form if they Gigantamax. For example, user @gonzarzez1938[3] posted the showdown between Bowser and Mario as a Pokémon battle from the games, gaining over 3,800 retweets and 18,000 likes (shown below, left). User @Shybaka289[4] commented, "After seeing the Bowser's Fury trailer I realize Bowser has a legit Pokemon evolution" (shown below, right).
