Night King Survives Dragon Fire refers to a memorable scene from the episode "The Long Night" of the epic fantasy TV series Game of Thrones in which the character Night King walks out of a stream of dragon fire unscathed. Online, a two-panel image based on the scene has been circulated as an exploitable.

Origin

On April 28th, 2019, episode three "The Long Night" of season eight of HBO-produced epic fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered.^[1] In one scene of the episode, character Daenerys Targaryen attempts to kill character Night King with dragon fire, but to no effect.

On April 29th, 2019, Redditor^[6]^[7] zody0 posted a three-panel meme based on the scene to /r/freefolk and /r/dankmemes subreddits, where it gained over 11,600 and 123 upvotes in six months, respectively. On the same day, zody0 posted^[8] a three-panel template for the format to /r/InsiderMemeTrading, with the post gaining 48 upvotes.

Spread

On April 30th, 2019, Reddit user zooeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee posted a two-panel meme based on the template to /r/egg_irl subreddit, where it gained over 1,600 upvotes in one month (shown below, left).^[2] On the same day, Redditor DaenerysxTargaryen posted another variation of the meme to /r/freefolk subreddit, gaining over 8,900 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).^[3]

In the following weeks, the format gained significant spread on Reddit, with notable examples posted in /r/freefolk,^[4] /r/memes^[5] and other subreddits.
