Nicole And Charlie's "Marriage Story" Argument is a four-panel image macro based on a scene from the 2019 drama film Marriage Story. In the climatic argument scene, Scarlett Johansson's and Adam Driver's characters scream at each other and Driver's character punches a wall.
Origin
On December 7th, 2019, the day after Marriage Story began streaming on Netflix, YouTuber Movie Guy uploaded the scene (shown below). The video garnered over 11,900 views in three days.
On December 7th, 2019, Twitter users began using a four-paneled depiction of the argument scene in a way similar to American Chopper Argument. Twitter user @ben_rosen[1] tweeted a variation which gained over 73,900 likes and 18,300 retweets in two days (shown below).
Spread
On December 7th, 2019, Twitter users continued to edit the four-paneled image with their own text. Twitter user @media_marshall[2] tweeted, "Might as well use the emerging #MarriageStory meme template to weigh in on the discourse around whose side the movie is on!" and posted an edit in which the characters have a meta argument (shown below, left). Twitter user @dreamoforgonon's[3] posted a variation which garnered over 12,700 likes in a day (shown below, right).
Pop Song Resurgence
In October 2020, variations of the meme appeared on Twitter. On October 1st, 2020, Twitter[4] user @demolitionprep tweeted a version about the Queen song "Another One Bites the Dust." In the meme, the image of Driver hitting the wall as the iconic beats to the song, and him yelling is captioned, "Another one bites the dust." The post received more than 85,000 likes and 23,000 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below, left). That day, Twitter[5] user @melogia posted a version for the Neil Diamond song "Sweet Caroline." The post received more than 299,000 likes and 63,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, center).
Throughout the week, others posted versions for different pop songs (shown below, right).
