"Never Meant" is a song by American emo band American Football. It is the opening track off their 1999 debut self-titled album, later known known as LP1. In the 2010s, the track became a popular source of remixes that blended the song with various video memes.
Origin
"Never Meant" is the opening track off American Football's self-titled debut album (retroactively known as LP1), which released September 14th, 1999 on Polyvinyl Records[1] (shown below).
Spread
On June 5th, 2014, Polyvinyl Records released a music video for the track in promotion of the deluxe version of the album, featuring the house that appears on the album cover (shown below).
On June 29th, 2015, YouTuber "i left my wallet downstairs official" posted a remix of the song with Death Grips vocals, gaining over 25,000 views, the first known comedic mashup of the song (shown below, left). On June 15th, 2017, YouTuber Keeginpwns posted a Binky Listens To video featuring the song, gaining over 27,000 views (shown below, right).
Over the following years, multiple popular remixes featuring "Never Meant" were posted to YouTube, including a November 19th, 2019 post by "kanna lost her jaw." which used Super Mario 64 sounds and gained over 432,000 views (shown below, left) and a synthwave remix posted by Astro's 2nd Channel on February 16th, 2020 that gained over 122,000 views (shown below, right).
