About
Never Do It For Free refers to an exploitable comic from the webcomics According to Devin. The comic shows a father telling his son "If you're good at something, never do it for free." The comic then imagines the son years later charging for a mundane or self-deprecating task.
Origin
On August 24th, 2016, According to Devin uploaded the original comic.[1] In the original comic, the boy charges for "Overanalyzing Everything."
Precursor
"If You're Good At Something Never Do It For Free" is an expression that has existed long before the webcomic. For example, in the 2008 superhero film The Dark Knight, the character The Joker uses the expression. The film was released on July 18th, 2008 (shown below).
Spread
The comic saw light spread as an exploitable in the following year. Some early examples include an edit featuring Lightning McQueen from Cars that was posted in an Imgur thread on January 10th, 2017[2] (shown below, left). Another referencing the musical Hamilton was posted to Imgur on November 21st, 2016 (shown below, right).
One of the most popular examples of the exploitable was posted to /r/me_irl on December 1st, 2017, turning the task into "Stolen Memes." The post gained over 25,000 points (shown below, left). After that post, more edits began to appear. A popular example posted May 4th, 2018 to /r/animemes gained over 350 points (shown below, right).
