Negative Rizz

Negative Rizz is a variant of the slang term rizz or unspoken rizz that means when someone has less than Zero Rizz, meaning their flirtatious charisma is so bad that they repel potential mates, indicative of a negative amount of attraction that infers repulsion. The term trended on TikTok in late 2022 used by creators who labeled themselves, their friends or characters as having negative rizz.

Origin

On July 26th, 2021, two Twitter^[1][2] users namedropped "negative rizz" for the first time on the platform. For instance, Twitter^[2] user LegiamasC replied to a thread started by Twitch streamer YourRage, writing, "That’s proof they got negative rizz," gaining 39 likes in a year and a half. Most likely, "negative rizz," was uttered in an e-date stream or e-date reaction sometime around July 26th.

Spread

Starting in 2022, the term "negative rizz" became commonplace on TikTok due to videos that posed skits or labeled other video creators as having "negative rizz." For instance, on May 19th, 2022, TikToker^[3] robstacxz posted a video that referenced "the weather app" concept from the When the Hoes Arrive meme and also the My Brother In Christ meme, gaining roughly 9,500 plays and over 990 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On June 3rd, 2022, TikToker^[4] byefarzy posted a video that labeled friends that deepen their voice around women as "negative rizz," gaining roughly 900,900 plays and 166,000 likes in six months (shown below, right).

Going into late 2022, videos showing "negative rizz" earned more engagement. For instance, a TikTok filter surfaced in late 2022 called the Rizz Meter^[5] that had "Negative Rizz" as an option when rating the subject's rizz levels. As an example, on October 22nd, 2022, TikToker^[6] kevbro_7 posted a video using the filter and was classified as "Negative Rizz," gaining roughly 2.8 million plays and 449,800 likes in two months (shown below, left). Other "negative rizz" videos surfaced that labeled animals and others as having "negative rizz." For instance, on November 28th, 2022, TikToker^[7] brettpinnelli3 posted a video of Breaking Bad's Walter White with negative rizz, additionally referencing the Lightskin Stare. The video received roughly 308,700 plays and 43,800 likes in 12 days (shown below, right).
