Naruto Run

About

Naruto Run refers to the unique running style of the protagonist Naruto Uzumaki in the Japanese anime series Naruto, where he is often depicted sprinting with his arms stretched behind him.

Origin

In the Naruto anime series, which premiered on October 3rd, 2002, Naruto is often shown running with his arms angled behind his body (shown below).

On September 6th, 2006, YouTuber mfbrice uploaded footage of himself mimicking the running stlye in a video titled "Anime Run" (shown below).

Spread

While the particular run existed before Naruto, it was the anime which popularized the concept and respectively caused it to be dubbed the Naruto Run.

On March 10th, 2008, a WikiHow page titled "How to Run Like Naruto" was created^[1], which provides instructions for running in a similar fashion to the anime character. On September 24th, 2014, the AppStoreVn YouTube channel uploaded a video titled "Naruto in Real Life," in which a stuntman dressed as the character performs various parkour moves while running with arms outstretched behind him (shown below, right).

On May 31st, 2016, YouTuber RealApollo uploaded a video of himself attempting to follow the WikiHow guide for running like Naruto (shown below, left). On July 11th, YouTuber Joe Inoue uploaded footage of a Naruto Run event held in Porto Alegre, Brazil (shown below, right).

On August 27th, the ManimeTV YouTube channel uploaded a video titled "Does the Naruto Run Really Work?" On August 8th, 2017, a Facebook^[2] page was created for a Naruto run event to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 10th. On August 25th, Kotaku^[3] published an article reporting about various Naruto Run Facebook event pages from around the world.^[4]

Storm Area 51

Storm Area 51 refers to a satirical Facebook event which suggests that attendees storm the American airbase Area 51, long-rumored to hold top-secret information about extra-terrestrials. The description of the event urges participants to perform the Naruto Run in order to "move faster than bullets." On July 19th, 2019, Redditor PerturbedPython submitted photographs of a man dressed in a military form giving a presentation on the Naruto Run titled "Actual Air Force Brief My Cousin Had to Sit Through" (shown below). Within 24 hours, the post gained over 124,700 points (96% upvoted) and 2,500 comments on /r/memes.^[5]
