Naren Patel Qantas Airline Fight Video is a viral public freakout video in which a man, reportedly identified as 28-year-old Naren Patel, was restrained by passengers and flight attendants after he allegedly attempted to molest or assault an air hostess and then attack others aboard a Qantas flight QF46 from Bali, Indonesia to Melbourne, Australia in late December 2023. A screenshot image of Patel being restrained in a choke hold spawned numerous memes on social media over the following days.

Origin

On December 30th, 2023, members of a Qantas flight crew were reportedly forced to restrain a disruptive passenger during a flight from Bali to Melbourne after the individual, later identified as 28-year-old man Naren Patel from Victoria,^[1] allegedly assaulted a female flight attendant and threatened to stab passengers and other crew members. According to an article from the New York Post the day of the incident, passengers said the man was agitated and shouted before the episode took place, with one witness claiming that the man was screaming for his mum and dad.^[2]

On December 31st, 2023, 9 News Australia uploaded a video to its YouTube channel in which it covered the story of the incident in a report, which received over 39,000 views and 230 likes in 48 hours (seen below).

On January 1st, 2024, the X / Twitter account @AsianDigest^[3] posted a video of the altercation (shown below) that received over 943,000 views, 1,700 likes and 1,000 reposts in 22 hours (seen below) as the clip went viral on the platform.

Also that day, @AsianDigest^[3] uploaded a screen capture of Patel in a headlock or chokehold from another passenger, garnering over 904,000 views, 13,000 likes and 2,900 reposts in 24 hours (seen below) as other users on the platform began commenting on it and making memes in the replies.

The image continued to spread on X throughout January 1st and 2nd, 2024, with numerous users making posts alongside it. For example, on January 1st, X user BaigsonAuction^[4] posted a caption with the image, receiving over 319,000 views in over 24 hours (seen below, left). On January 2nd, X user TimesAlgebraIND^[5] also made a post using the image, which received over 150,000 views and 2,8000 likes in four hours (seen below, right).

The viral video also spread to additional platforms like Reddit and 4chan in early January 2024. For example, on January 1st, a 4chan^[6] post to /pol/ garnered over 330 replies and 60 images in roughly 24 hours (shown below). On January 2nd, Redditor Burning_BUSSY then reposted @AsianDigest's tweet with Patel in the headlock to the /r/CringetopiaRM^[7] subreddit, garnering over 900 upvotes and 90 comments in 10 hours.
