Não Gostei, Amei refers to a quote by the Angolan comedian and singer Príncipe Ouro Negro said after tasting a local Brazilian food for a YouTube show called Rango Bravo. His peculiar way of speaking Não Gustuei, Asmei (I didn't like it, I loved it) became a viral TikTok sound in March 2023, inspiring memes and comedy skits on the video platform.

Origin

On March 14th, 2023, the Angolan Januário Joaquim Mujinga, better known as Príncipe Ouro Negro,^[1] was a guest in a cooking/interview program called Rango Bravoon the Podpah YouTube^[2] channel. While Príncipe was tasting some local Brazilian sweets, the interviewer, Diogo Defante, asked if he liked the food, to which he responded with the peculiar Portuguese phrase "Não gostei, amei." The video (seen below) garnered 1.8 million views and 136,000 likes in two weeks.

The quote by the Angolan was uploaded on TikTok^[3] by user @osvaldinooskei on the same day the original interview was released on YouTube. The post (seen below, left) garnered 2.5 million plays, 452,400 likes and 688 other videos using it as sound in two weeks. The phrase became an ironic sound on the platform, often being used in skits related to food that someone asked you to try but you're too embarrassed to say you didn't like. For example, TikTok^[4] user @felipeborbad posted a video with his girlfriend and the overlay text "when your girlfriend is addicted to sushi and takes you to try it." The video received 1.8 million plays and 313,400 likes since it was uploaded on March 31st, 2023 (seen below, right).

The quote has also been used for videos in which the person is being aloof. For instance, TikTok^[5] user @priscilamourx posted a video showing that she is actually happy that her partner decided to wear an all-black outfit. The video (seen below, left) received 62,000 likes since it was uploaded on April 2nd, 2023. TikToker^[6] @brunoss_santos also posted similar aloof content but related to a dubious and cheap drink that his friend brought to a party. The video (seen below, right) was uploaded on March 14th and garnered 227,700 plays and 39,900 likes in two weeks.
