Nani the Fuck?

Nani the Fuck? refers to a copypasta and slang term meaning WTF. The original copypasta is a variation on the the Navy Seal Copypasta, replacing the specifics in the post with Japanese words. It reads:

"Nani the fuck did you just fucking iimasu about watashi, you chiisai bitch desuka? Watashi'll have anata know that watashi graduated top of my class in Nihongo 3, and watashi've been involved in iroirona Nihongo tutoring sessions, and watashi have over sanbyaku perfect test scores. Watashi am trained in kanji, and watashi is the top letter writer in all of southern California. Anata are nothing to watashi but just another weeaboo. Watashi will korosu anata the fuck out with vocabulary the likes of which has neber meen mimasu'd before on this continent, mark watashino fucking words. Anata thinks that anata can get away with hanashimasing that kuso to watashi over the intaaneto? Omou again, fucker. As we hanashimasu, watashi am contacting watashino secret netto of otakus accross the USA, and anatano IP is being traced right now so you better junbishimasu for the ame, ujimushi. The ame that korosu's the pathetic chiisai thing anata calls anatano life. You're fucking shinimashita'd, akachan."

Origin

On January 16th, 2013, an anonymous 4chan user in the /jp/ forum posted the earliest known use of the copypasta (shown below).^[4]

Spread

The following year, on September 7th, 2014, Redditor ^[1] kiryuuuinn posted a screenshot of the post in the /r/weeabootales. The post received more than 300 points (95% upvoted) and 20 comments. In the post, Redditor ad_infinitum95 posted a translation of some of the words in the post (shown below). Others commented that they did not realize that the post was the Navy Seal Copypasta.^[2]

Following the post, some used the beginning of the phrase "nani the fuck" as a slang term meaning "WTF." On November 6th, 2017, Urban Dictionary ^[3] user zeroloveforanyofyou defined the phrase "nani the fuck" as "The most accurate description of an absurd situation in which everything must be taken seriously to the point of incredibly non-treathening incomprehension." The post received more than 100 upvotes in two years (shown below).

On July 18th, 2017, YouTuber Dottovu uploaded a dramatic reading of the copypasta, gathering upwards of 220,000 views and 1,500 comments over the next two years (shown below).
