About

The Name a Woman Trend, also known as Tell Me a Woman's Name or Ask Your Man to Name a Woman, refers to a trend on TikTok in which women ask their husbands, boyfriends, brothers and fathers (etc.) to name a woman. If the man doesn't respond with the name of his wife, girlfriend, mother or sister (etc.) then the woman should "start a fight," according to the trend's creator. Another part of the trend was that men typically responded with "Hillary Clinton" which was notarized by streamer Ludwig. The trend was inspired by a clip from Billy on the Street with Billy Eichner. TikTokers picked up the concept in late 2023. Overall, the trend was similar to the precursor Roman Empire Trend.

Origin

On December 7th, 2012, season 2, episode 1 of Billy on the Street titled "Name Three White People!, with Rashida Jones" aired on American television.[1] On March 7th, 2013, the YouTube[2] channel of billyonthestreettv uploaded a clip from the episode in which a young woman is asked by Eichner to "Name a woman" to which she struggles (shown below). Over 10 years, the video received roughly 3.5 million plays and 88,000 likes.

The clip was notably reposted to TikTok[3] by @billyeichner on July 26th, 2023, gaining roughly 19.9 million plays and 2.6 million likes in a year.

Roughly a year later, on November 29th, 2023, TikToker[4] @austinshow posted a clip from his and ""Hasan Piker's":https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/people/hasan-hasanabi-piker podcast Fear& in which streamer Ludwig and Aidan were guests. Ludwig tested a theory of his that if you ask a man to name a woman, his answer will likely be "Hillary Clinton." Over six days, the video received roughly 2.1 million plays and 256,600 likes (shown below).

Later on November 29th, 2023, TikToker[5] @taniatotanesmartinez posted a video in which she asked her husband to name a woman. He answered with her name and TikToker @taniatotanesmartinez mentioned how she expected his answer to be "Hillary Clinton." The video received roughly 48,900 plays and 520 likes in six days (shown below, left).

On November 30th, 2023, TikToker[6] @taniatotanesmartinez posted a second video in which she urged her female followers to ask their male partners to "name a woman" and if they didn't respond with their name, then they should "start a fight." The video gained roughly 6 million plays and 729,600 likes in five days, predominantly starting the "Name a Woman" trend (shown below, right).

Spread

Going into December 2023, TikTokers added to the trend with duets and stitches. For instance, on December 3rd, 2023, TikToker[7] @abbieherbert posted a stitch of her boyfriend who answered Hellen Keller, receiving roughly 5.4 million plays and 505,800 likes in two days (shown below, left).

Also on December 3rd, 2023, TikToker[8] @jusdancedotcom posted a similar stitch that gained roughly 572,300 plays and 57,600 likes in two days (shown below, right).
