Nah I'mma Do My Own Thing is a quote from Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse spoken by Miles Morales. The quote was featured in the April 2023 trailer for the film and was remixed with Playboi Carti's "Sovereign" by a TikToker that month, becoming a viral original sound leading up to and following the film's June 2023 release. The catchphrase also saw use in memes on Twitter that month.

Origin

On April 4th, 2023, the second trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was published to YouTube,^[1] garnering over 45 million views in two months (shown below). The trailer features a quote spoken by Miles Morales during the film, where he says, "Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah, I'mma do my own thing."

On April 9th, TikToker^[2] @kagayaku.ae posted a remix of the quote from the trailer with Playboi Carti's "Sovereign," garnering over 6.4 million views in two month (shown below). This is one of the earliest notable examples of the quote being used as a meme.

On April 13th, 2023, the SpiderVerse Tenor^[3] page posted a GIF of Miles Morales saying the quote (shown below). Following the film's release on June 2nd, the quote became increasingly popular in memes. For example, on June 5th, Instagram^[4] user officialillutale posted a meme using the quote.

On June 7th, Twitter^[5] user @scorchedprince posted a Tears of the Kingdom meme using the GIF, garnering over 22,000 likes in a week (shown below, left). On June 9th, Twitter^[6] user @sen7ience posted a Gunna writing fire meme using the quote, garnering over 57,000 likes in a week (shown below, right).

The original sound for TikToker @kagayaku.ae Playboi Carti remix became increasingly popular following the release of the film, inspiring over 23,000 uses by June 16th. The most popular trend under the sound sees TikTokers make a heart with their hands referred to as the "Spiderman Heart" or "Spidey Heart." For example, on June 11th, 2023, TikToker^[7] @itsnotevennataly posted a video doing the trend, garnering over 7.1 million views in five days (shown below, left). On June 14th, TikToker^[8] @brookemonk_ posted a video doing the trend that gained over 3.2 million views in two days (shown below, right).
