About

My Toothbrush The Day I Got It vs. Now refers to an exploitable image macro of a white guy with a stovetop haircut who's labeled as a newly bought toothbrush. Meme creators then compare him to a secondary photo of a different person with a strange haircut, showing how their toothbrush has progressed or deteriorated over time with use. After the original meme was shared in late 2021 on Reddit, it started getting remixed and deep-fried as it circulated platforms, relating to ironic memes and anti-memes.

Origin

On September 20th, 2021, Redditor 8Bit_Innovations posted a meme to /r/dankmemes[1] that used two pictures of men with funny haircuts, the one on top had a stovetop and the one on the bottom had two stringy pigtails. The images were captioned to make a joke about how water flowed out of the meme creator's shower head the day they installed it compared to two months later. The meme earned roughly 50,600 upvotes over the course of six months (shown below, left).

On October 4th, 2021, Redditor 8Bit_Innovations posted another meme to /r/dankmemes[2] using the same template, this time using captions that read, "My toothbrush the day I got it / My toothbrush two weeks later," earning roughly 4,500 upvotes over the course of five months (shown below, right).

Spread

The meme from Redditor 8Bit_Innovations was reposted to several other platforms going into the remainder of late 2021. For instance, on November 12th, the Instagram[3] page oh_flux posted it and received roughly 23,900 likes over the course of four months.

On January 16th, 2022, Redditor XCRAFT900 posted a meme to /r/dankmemes[4] that resurfaced the template, this time being a slight variation of it, instead using a photo of Kodiyakredd from the Island Boys. The meme earned roughly 7,800 upvotes over the course of two months (show below).

On March 7th, 2022, Redditor MRprogamer124 posted a cropped and weathered version of the original meme to /r/OkBuddyRetard, [5] writing in the description, "My toothbrush is always looking like this when I buy it 😭," and earning roughly 10,200 upvotes in one day (shown below).

Later in the day on March 7th, Redditor scruffulime7675 posted a picture of worn-down, heavily used toothbrushes to /r/OkBuddyRetard,[6] captioning it, "My toothbrush after using it once [I stuck it up my But]," earning over 60 upvotes in one day (shown below, left). Also on March 7th, Redditor Veganebackoblade posted to /r/OkBuddyRetard,[7] re-editing text in the meme to read, "My toothbrush now," to imply that they hadn't been brushing their teeth and insisting that no one tell their mom. The meme earned roughly 6,500 upvotes in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).

Going into the rest of March 2022, multiple meme creators on Reddit started exploiting the meme en masse. Many of them used the meme (shown above, right) that read "My toothbrush now," editing in different, anti-meme third panels similar to meme trends like Robert Downey Jr. Comments and Be Like Bro.
