My Politics Are Whatever This Thing Is is a catchphrase used as a caption for images that reflect one's political views. Originally used primarily by traditionalists, the catchphrase has often been used for the purposes of parody.

Origin

On September 2nd, 2021, Twitter[1] user @thedmorris tweeted a photograph of a two-story suburban house with an American flag displayed on the wall, writing, "my politics are whatever this is." The post (shown below) gained over 1,000 retweets and 16,400 likes in ten months.

Spread

On the same day, other users started pardoying the post by using the caption with various images. For example, omn the same day, Twitter[2] user @CatholicClod paired the caption with the album cover for American Football (shown below, left). On September 6th, 2021, Instagram[3] user basedarchives combined the caption with a The Pack meme image. The post received over 2,200 likes in ten months (shown below, center). On September 7th, Instagram[4] user anarcho.petorianismv2 posted a Return to Monke version that gained over 9,500 likes and was widely reposted in the following days (shown below, right).

In the following months, the caption was often used by proponents of traditional and conservative values. For example, on September 25th, Republican Representative Matt Gaetz tweeted[5] a photograph of a coupe looking at the American flag with the caption (shown below, left). On October 3rd, 2021, Twitter[6] user @OregonBlueDog tweeted a drawing of a traditional suburb, with the post gaining over 940 retweets and 9,600 likes (shown below, center). On December 23rd, Facebook[7] page Those Florida Girls made a post that received over 10,000 reactions and 58,000 shares in six months (shown below, right).

On June 5th, 2022, artist and game developer Ville Kallio quote tweeted[8] @OregonBlueDog's post, commenting negatively on the image (shown below, left). The tweet reignited the parody trend, as multiple users shared various images paired with the caption in the following days (examples shown below, left and right).
