My Fatass Thought This Was Fried Chicken or My Fatass Thought This Was X is a phrasal template that began as a way to share images of things that could be mistaken for food. Over time, jokes about mistaking different things for food in a self-deprecating manner became more commonplace. These memes sometimes subvert the premise of the joke by jokingly mistaking things for non-food items or commenting on things that do not look remotely like food.
Origin
The earliest known post mistaking a pack of brown, curly-haired puppies for fried chicken was a May 12th, 2014, tweet from X / Twitter[1] user @ASHAtheCreator, who wrote, "Bruh, my fat ass thought these puppies was some nice ass fried chicken. 😩😂👅👀🍗." The post gathered over 2,000 likes in ten years (seen below).
Spread
On October 17th, 2016, the Facebook[2] page "Explore Talent – Acting and Modeling" posted an image captioned, "Broken car wash foam," writing, "My fatass thought this was ice cream…" The post gathered over 4,000 reactions in eight years (seen below, left).
On May 4th, 2017, X[3] user @courtneymnoel quoted an image of an air mattress, writing, "My fat ass thought this was an ice cream sandwich..," gathering over 100,000 likes in seven years (seen below, right).
By 2018, jokes about mistaking things for food in a self-deprecatory manner came to be understood as overdone and possibly even engagement bait. An October 5th, 2018, post by X[4] user @joeygllghr showed him commenting on a photo of a person wearing a yellow face mask. The caption read, "Lmao my fat ass thought this was a Lego person," with the post gathering over 2,000 likes in six years (seen below, left).
On November 18th, 2020, X[5] user @lilsamsquanch66 posted an image of white bell peppers, easily mistaken for teeth, but instead chose to write, "My fat ass thought this was chicken nuggets 😂." The post gathered over 1,500 likes in four years (seen below, right).
