Murr Sleeping (Impractical Jokers)

Murr Sleeping refers to an image macro taken by Joe Gatto of Impractical Jokers co-star James "Murr" Murray with the caption reading "Murr Sleeping." The image spread on anti-meme subreddits in the early 2020s and has been edited as an exploitable meme template.

Origin

While it's unknown when Gatto posted the picture of Murray, the image may have first been posted to Reddit on December 19th, 2018, when a deleted Reddit account posted a recursive meme featuring the image in the subreddit /r/lithuaniakittens,^[3] gaining no points in six years (shown below). The post is a screenshot of a meme that appears to have been first posted in /r/pyrocynical, though no such post exists as of June 2024.

Spread

Over the following two years, the image saw spare use in anti-comedy subreddits. It was posted to Reddit on September 26th, 2019, when user bigdaddyhashbrown posted it to /r/comedyheaven^[1] and gained over 3,000 points before the image was deleted. It was reposted on July 21st, 2020, in /r/skamtebord^[2] by user Garsyan, gaining over 370 points in four years (shown below).

In the 2020s, the image began seeing use as an exploitable. For example, on March 26th, 2023, iFunny^[4] user Germoney posted a Star Wars edit of the image, gaining nine likes in one year (shown below, left).

On June 18th, 2024, Twitter / X user @ghoulrunnings^[5] posted an example that reads "Murr fell to my blade," gaining over 50 likes in two days (shown below, right).
