Mr. Sandman Cat

About

Mr. Sandman Cat is a viral video using a nine panel TikTok effect in which the sounds and and lyrics of The Chordette's song "Mr. Sandman" is sequentially mimicked in each panel by video footage of a cat. In August 2019, the video was shared on Twitter which sparked similar renditions of the video using cats, though in January of 2019, variations of Mr. Sandman nine panel TikTok videos were insularly popular.

Origin

On August 16th, TikTok user @jade13tr, uploaded a video in which they used their cat to mimic the lyrics of "Mr. Sandman" (shown below). The video gained over 1.6 million likes and 255,700 shares in four days.

Precursor

In January of 2019, many TikTok uers began using multiple panels to reenact The Chordettes song. On January 22nd, 2019, TikTok user @taro0429 uploaded a video featuring himself which accumulated over 38,600 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On March 16th, 2019, @chappytan uploaded a version featuring a dog (shown below, right). The video garnered over 341,000 likes and 12,000 shares in five months.

Spread

On August 16th, 2019, Twitter user @_glittergoth reposted the cat version and said, "this is the best tiktok i've ever seen in my entire LIFE" (shown below). The tweet gained over 496,000 likes and 200,500 retweets in three days.

The next day, Twitter users began responding with their own cat renditions. Twitter user @milavavan replied with their, "recreation" and garnered over 500 likes in two days (shown below).
