Mr. Krabs "Money Money Money Ahhh" or Mr. Krabs Dying refers to a series of video edits where a sound effect of Mr. Krabs saying "Money" three times followed by distorted screaming is added to footage of real crabs dying. The dialogue is not spoken by Mr. Krabs' original voice actor. The earliest known video edit was posted to YouTube in April 2021 and inspired more edits of the same type over the course of the year on YouTube and TikTok.

Origin

The origin of the audio clip of Mr. Krabs saying "money money money" followed by distorted screaming is unknown. It does not appear to be an actual clip from the show SpongeBob SquarePants. On April 20th, 2021, YouTuber^[4] fatcat posted a video of a crab getting eaten by a fish, with the screams timed to start the moment the crab gets attacked, gaining over 216,000 views in six months (shown below). This is the earliest known video edit combining crab death footage with the audio clip.

Spread

On June 18th, 2021, TikToker^[5] @titanusgodzillaking posted a video combining the audio clip with a scene from Godzilla vs. Kong, gaining over 1.2 million views in four months (shown below, left). The Original Sound became notably popular over the course of the month, inspiring over 3,800 videos on TikTok^[6] in the same span of time, setting it to footage of crabs and other creatures dying (most popular example shown below, right).

Starting in July and picking up in September 2021, videos of the sound effect attached to clips of crabs dying became viral on YouTube. On July 17th, 2021, YouTuber^[1] Some Stop Sign posted a crab falling onto hot food. The video has over 3.6 million views in three months (shown below, left). On July 25th, 2021, YouTuber^[2] Mr.Cracked posted a crab getting its head chopped off by a machine. The video has over 661,475 views in three months (shown below, right).

On September 13th, YouTuber^[7] CoolSnot posted a video combining footage from the 2004 SpongeBob SquarePants episode "SpongeBob B.C." with the audio, gaining over 1.7 million views in two weeks (shown below).

On October 3rd, 2021, YouTuber^[3] Lessons In Meme Culture a video about the meme. The video received over 80,934 views in less than 24 hours (shown below).
