Mr. Electric

About

Mr. Electric is the major antagonist from the 2005 sci-fi comedy film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D. He is played by George Lopez. In the late 2010s and early 2020s, the character became a popular subject of exploitable memes.

Origin

On June 10th, 2005 the Robert Rodriguez directed film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D, was released. The protagonist's real-world teacher Mr. Electricidad appears in his dream world as Mr. Electric, a villainous robot with electrically connected appendages. Throughout the film, Mr. Electric makes many cheesy puns related to electricity.

Spread

Mr. Electric's design later became the subject of myriad meme formats in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Many of these included turning Mr. Electric's design into an exploitable, substituting various faces over George Lopez's. For example, on December 7th, 2015, an example showed Pope Francis' face in an /r/photoshopbattles thread^[2] (shown below, left). January 26th, 2017, a deleted Reddit user posted Kim Jong-un's face over Lopez's to /r/dankmemes,^[1] gaining over 590 points (shown below, right).

In recent years, Mr. Electric has appeared as a character in other meme templates. For example, on November 7th, 2018, user xMcNiglet of /r/dankmemes^[3] posted Mr. Electric in a Drakeposting edit, gaining over 5,400 points (shown below, left). On December 11th, 2019, Redditor SnakeWithAHate posted a Galaxy Brain edit with Mr. Electric in /r/memes^[4] (shown below, right).
