About
Mr. Bean Waiting is an image macro meme format and reaction image showing Mr. Bean waiting on the side of the road by a field for a car to pick him up. The meme is based on a scene in the 2007 film Mr. Bean's Holiday and was first used as a meme as early as 2016. The format became increasingly popular on Reddit over the following years, often with captions about waiting for something to happen.
Origin
On March 24th, 2007, Mr. Bean's Holiday was released. In one scene, Mr. Bean waits for a ride at the side of the road in front of a field. He checks his watch, then eventually lies on the ground, waiting for his ride. The earliest known meme to use the scene was posted to the nairaland[1] forum on September 11th, 2016. According to the post, the meme originated from Instagram, although it is unknown which Instagram user originally posted it.
On October 9th, 2016, 9GAG[2] user iam_fatcunt posted a meme using the same scene captioned, "Me waiting for a relationship," labelling four images of Mr. Bean each with a year, garnering over 5,200 upvotes in nine years. The meme was reposted by the @9GAG X[3] account on November 13th, garnering over 3,300 likes in the same span of time. The four-panel version became the dominant version of the meme going forward.
Spread
The meme continued to spread over the following years, becoming notably poopular on Reddit.
On July 22nd, 2020, Redditor u/Warlord53104 posted a version of the meme to the /r/memes[4] subreddit referencing the That's Another One For Apocalypse Bingo format, reading, "Redditors waiting for another disaster in 2020 so that they can use the 'That's another for the Apocalypse bingo!' template," garnering over 95,000 upvotes in five years.
On March 2nd, 2021, Redditor u/zaccjm posted a version of the meme to the /r/memes[5] subreddit reading, "Me waiting for my baby Minecraft animals to grow up so I can put them through their 6th generation of incest:" garnering over 37,000 upvotes in four years.
On July 6th, 2025, Redditor u/vmax1608 posted a version of the meme to the /r/memes[6] subreddit reading, "ME WAITING FOR YOUNG GENERATIONS TO INVENT A NEW REBELLIOUS MUSIC GENRE THAT SHOCKS MY GENERATION," garnering over 88,000 upvotes in two weeks.
