Moon Emoji Creep refers to a character used primarily on Twitter made of multiple moon emoji. By utilizing the way Twitter formats posts and multiple moons with different shading, Twitter users can create a shadowy, ghost-like figure. The character is generally paired with captions making it seem intrusive and creepy.

Origin

On June 16th, 2018, Twitter user @yoripi_evolved[1] posted the emoji character with Japanese text that roughly translates to "excuse me…", gaining over 2,300 retweets and 4,200 likes (shown below).



Spread

The character began spreading on Twitter two days later on June 18th after a post by @fallout76 gained over 44,000 retweets and 102,000 likes (shown below, left). Another popular post that day tweeted by @filmgloss referenced a popular Vine video, gaining over 28,000 retweets and 82,000 likes (shown below, right).



Twitter users used the character in various ways. One common way portrayed the character as intrusive and creepy. A K-pop joke tweeted by @kidovna gained over 13,000 retweets and 30,000 likes (shown below, left). Another joke tweeted by @meftmeth joked about how Loki spied on Thor in the Marvel films (shown below, right). The character was submitted twice to Reddit's /r/copypasta board.[2][3]
