Moo Moo Meadows Cow refers to the cows that appear in the Mario Kart stage "Moo Moo Meadows," depicted with horns, a smile and a ring through their noses. "Moo Moo Meadows" first appeared in Mario Kart Wii in 2008 and features several cows that act as moving obstacles for players. The cow became an increasing subject of memes throughout the 2010s and 2020s, with the track becoming a fan favorite and appearing in Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch.

Origin

On April 10th, 2008, Mario Kart Wii was released, featuring the track "Moo Moo Meadows." The stage features several cows that act as obstacles for the player by moving across the track (shown below). The track later reappeared in Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U and Switch, becoming a fan favorite. "Moo Moo Meadows" is inspired by the Mario Kart 64 track "Moo Moo Farm," which features similar cows.

"Moo Moo Meadows," in particular the cows featured in the track, became the increasing subject of memes throughout the 2010s and early 2020s. One of the earliest known memes to explicitly focus on the cows was posted by YouTuber^[1] VerdiChris on August 26th, 2014, titled "Moo Moo Meadows in Real Life," showing footage of a player running into a cow on the stage followed by real footage of a cyclist running into a real cow, garnering over 25,000 views in 10 years (shown below). The video was shared on Cheezburger^[2] at a later date.

Memes about the Moo Moo Meadows cow became increasingly popular throughout the early 2020s. On September 17th, 2021, TikToker^[3] @jakefresca posted a 'Let's Go' Saweetie meme about the cows, garnering over 5.2 million views in three years (shown below, left). The meme was shared by Instagram^[4] user baddieb.barbietings on September 22nd, garnering over 14,000 likes in the same span of time. On October 16th, 2022, the same TikToker^[5] shared another meme about the cows, garnering over 2.5 million views in just over a year (shown below, right).

On February 20th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @conr16 posted a meme about the cows, garnering over 900,000 views in a year. On November 12th, X^[7] user @KONDEonline posted a You Smoke Too Tough meme about the cow, garnering over 50,000 likes in two months (shown below, left).

On December 27th, X^[8] user @ANerdNamedJerry posted an image of the "Moo Moo Meadows" title card, writing, "trans person: I'm trans | society: ok | that cool ass moo moo meadows cow bein chill af," garnering over 1,700 likes in two weeks (shown below, right). The meme was reposted by Instagram^[9] user grubburd on December 30th, garnering over 18,000 likes in the same span of time.

On January 6th, 2024, X^[10] user @GrenNSW posted, "If the Moo Moo Meadows cow is your comfort character, open this thread," with the thread consisting of images of burgers, beef and other cow-made products, garnering over 2,300 likes in four days. On January 8th, X^[11] user @notdreamland posted an image of the cow, writing, "dating a girl that’s not chronically online is so disorienting cause I showed her this image and instead of saying some shit like 'dumbass looking cow' or 'me when I see fentanyl' she hit me with the 'aww they’re cute!!'" garnering over 105,000 likes in two days (shown below, left).

On the same day, X^[12] user @BuzzPrincess1 posted a dark fucked up version meme featuring the cow, garnering over 60,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).

The post by @BuzzPrincess1 inspired a series of quote-reposts sharing similar variations on the meme. For example, later that day X^[13] user @DarkerJenny_ posted a version that gained over 28,000 likes in a week (shown below, left). On January 9th, X^[14] user @ashen_poochy posted a version that gained over 37,000 likes (shown below, center). On January 10th, X^[15] user @EVIL0LLY posted a version that gained over 10,000 likes in six days (shown below, right).
