Monkey Sony Walkman refers to a Sony Walkman advertisement video in which a monkey known as Choromatsu listens to music using a Walkman. Online, the video has been paired with a variety of songs, depicting the monkey listening to the music in question.

Origin

The earliest footage online was uploaded on April 7th, 2010 by YouTube^[1] user onlyfyi in a video titled "Weird Japanese Ads – Monkey with Sony Walkman". In the video, a monkey named Choromatsu listens to music on a Sony Walkman. The video received more than 10,000 views in eleven years (shown below). Choromatsu the monkey died at 29 years old in 2007^[2].

Spread

Many years later, it became popular to pair video with various kinds of music by editing songs in. For example On April 15th, 2019, YouTube^[3] user Cole uploaded video "Monkey listening to playboi carti (location)". The video received 37,000 views (shown below, right). On July 23rd, 2020, YouTube^[4] user Dugan Goether uploaded another video "monkey with guts theme" which received more than 2,4 million views (shown below, right).

On January 2020, an unknown Facebook user created the page "The same video of walkman monkey with different music" as a place to upload various video of the monkey. One of the most popular videos was uploaded on January 14th, 2020 and titled "𝘽𝙖𝙠𝙖 𝙈𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙞". In the video, the original music was changed to Baka Mitai. The video was received more than 1,700 reactions and 2,900 shares (shown below).^[5]
