About

Mogging or Mog is a slang term describing the act of dominating another person, commonly but not necessarily through the means of appearing more physically fit and attractive than them. Coined by pickup artists and initially popularized within the "manosphere," the term saw gradual popularization online in the late 2010s and 2020s.

Origin

The word "mogging" is derived from the acronym AMOG, which stands for "alpha male of the group," and stands for "dominating another person." The word originated in the pickup artist community, who advocated mogging other men as a way to attract women.[1]

Mogging can be accomplished through various means, but commonly boils down to appearing superior to another person, be it through being more physically attractive, being in a better shape, having better clothes or being smarter than them.

The word has been used on fitness forums and imageboards since at least 2016. For example, on May 19th, 2016, a 4chan[2] user used the term in a post about a 7 feet tall bodybuilder in /fit/ (shown below, left). On December 30th, 2016, a British user complained about getting height-mogged in a /fit/[3] thread (shown below, right).

Spread

The term saw initial spread outside of imageboards and incel subreddits in early 2021 when it started appearing in memes and humorous posts on Instagram, Twitter and iFunny. For example, on January 16th, 2021, Instagram[4] meme account dark_iron_gains posted a meme using the phrase that gained over 36,000 views and 5,600 likes in two years (shown below, left). On September 12th, 2021, Instagram[5] page memes.to.depth posted an INTJ Stare meme that gained over 1,900 likes in two years (shown below, right).

More posts about mogging, including screenshots of 4chan posts, were circulated online in the early 2020s. For example, on February 10th, 2022, iFunny[6] user Ismael posted a screenshot of a 4chan post that gained over 7,00 smiles on the app in one year (shown below, left). On July 18th, 2022, Twitter[7] user @massiveautism replied to a Shirtless Elon Musk joke with a photograph of Jeff Bezos on a yacht, commenting, "mogged by Jeff Bezos." The tweet (shown below, right) gained over 90 retweets and 5,200 likes in eight months.

On September 14th, 2021, "MOGGED – A Meme Experience" was uploaded by Jack PGM. The video received over 637,000 views and 19,000 likes in one year.[16]

On March 16th, 2022, a video titled "Mogging photos with sad music :(" was uploaded by Shiftry1130 on YouTube. The video received over 24,500 views and 690 likes in one year.[17]

On January 1st, 2023, classic clips uploaded a video titled "definition of mogged", and it garnered over 287,500 views and 5,800 likes in 2 months.[18]

Mog Types

Mogging is often labeled upon a mogger's characteristics against the moggee or the situational impact of the mog itself. As prime example, the Incel Wiki showcased American fitness influencer Connor Murphy mogging a significantly smaller and less muscular man, who had to pull away his girlfriend from the scene as she observed Murphy flexing his muscles (shown, below).[1]

  • Heightmogging — A heightmog takes place when a mogger is taller than the moggee. A brutal heightmog happens when there's a significant height difference (examples shown, below).
  • Jawmogging — Jawmogging is a form of mogging where the male with the more masculine, larger or more chiseled jawline mogs a man with a weak or roundish jaw (examples shown, below).[8]

  • Fogging — Fogging is a term that defines a mogging where the mogger is female.[9] Rather than deriving from "AMOG", it derives from "AFOG" as well as being the combination of various preexisting words, such as mog, foid and "fucked".[10] "Fogged" is also used when a man is being physically mogged by a woman (examples shown, below).
  • Breastmogging — Breastmogging, or tit-mogging is what happens when a woman with large breasts mogs a woman with a smaller breast size (examples shown, below).[11]
  • Dickmogging — A dickmog is a particular mog in which the mogger displays a longer or larger penis when wearing sweatpants or some other form of discernible clothing (examples shown, below).[12]
  • Buttmogging — Buttmogging happens when a mogger (generally a woman) mogs by displaying larger, more appealing and better shaped buttocks than the moggee (examples shown, below).[13]

  • Wristmogging — A wristmog is accomplished when a mogger has larger wrists than the moggee (examples shown, below).
  • Framemogging — A textbook "frame mog" happens when a mogger's body frame is wider and more prominent than a moggee's (examples shown, below).
  • Fashionmogging — In order to fashionmog, a mogger has to wear more stylish, appealing, refined and better looking clothes than the moggee (examples shown, below).
  • Brutal Mogging — A brutal mog happens when the mogger is mogging the moggee on multiple categories, such as height, jaw, chin, fashion, physique and more (examples shown, below).
Mogging can also happen between animals or even inanimate objects (examples shown, below).
  • Mog Battle — Mog Battles are a category of threads on Looksmax.org. In these threads, the users of the website vote or debate on who is mogging or which person would mog the other (examples shown, below).
Mogging pictures (images where people mog each other) are often shared online by dedicated accounts. The most popular one on Instagram, named "moggedby", posted its first mog on February 2nd, 2022,[21] and garnered over 4,005 followers in a year after over 835 posts on May 18th, 2023.[22] On February 12th, 2019, Reddit user chilean-dude posted on r/sadboys a photo of American rapper Cold Hart and Swedish music producer Yung Sherman standing side by side, captioning it "brutal MOGGING" (shown below, left).[23] The post received over 40 points in 4 years.
