About

Moderately-Damaged Myoukou, also known as "Myoukou Pose", is a series of photoshopped images featuring an illustration of Myoukou[1], a fleet girl from Japanese online card game Kantai Collection (KanColle). The parody images were often shared on Twitter between October 2013 and early 2014.

Origin

The game KanColle displays illustrations of injured fleet girls when they suffer "small," "massive" and "moderate" damage during the battles. The "moderate" damage illustration for the character Myoukou was often considered humorous for its sexually suggestive pose.

Spread

In the Japanese anonymous imageboard community 2channel, users have posted photoshopped images parodying fleet girls on the /gameswf/ (browser/smartphone games) board since the summer of 2013.

Early Photoshopped Myoukou Images in 2channel

In October 2013, the hashtag "#Myoko-ClassCrappyCollageGrand-Prix" (#妙高型クソコラグランプリ)[4] began circulating on Twitter, leading users to share photoshopped images of the character. This Twitter trend was soon covered by several online game[5][6] and naver matome news sites.[7] Additionally, dozens of parody illustrations inspired by moderately-damaged Myoukou were created on pixiv and Nico Nico Seiga, tagged under other names such as "Myoukou Mode" (妙高状態)[9] or "Myoukou Jump" (妙高飛び).[10] The trend began losing its momentum gradually around the spring of the following year.

Official Merchandise

In February 2015, a Japanese toy making company Takara Tomy announced that its popular product Pop-up Pirate begins an official collaboration campaign with Vocaloid and KanColle.[11] And despite of her less popularity compared to other more famous fleet girls, Myoukou was lined up as one of the four fleet girl products in the campaign with the moderately-damaged face which was the exactly same to that photoshopping image above.

Internet users soon reacted to this announcement, and claimed that it's obviously inspired by that crappy collage. One of the earliest tweet mentioning about it had earned over 10,000 retweets and 5,000 favorites within a few days.[12]
