Mob Wife Aesthetic or Mob Wife Trend is an aesthetic fashion trend based on stereotypical depictions of "mob wives," denoted by fashion choices including fur coats, animal-print patterns, leather pants, jewelry, designer bags and dark, neutral color palettes. The aesthetic was popularized on TikTok in January 2024 but purportedly first started spreading in late 2022, when TikToker @thesweetpaisana began posting "mob wife" videos. In October 2023 she posted a video suggesting winter 2023 and 2024 would be "mob wife winter," further spreading the aesthetic.

Origin

On October 7th, 2022, TikToker^[1] @thesweetpaisana posted a video where she exits a car wearing a long fur coat over a more neutral outfit, captioned, "Hot girl Summer is over, welcomg to mob wife fall," garnering over 53,000 likes in just over a year (shown below, left). Later that day she posted another video to TikTok^[2] explaining her history with the aesthetic, garnering over 700,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, right).

She continued to post videos about the mob wife aesthetic to TikTok^[3] going forward, including an October 21st upload showcasing a mob wife aesthetic look in preparation for what she calls "Mob Wife Winter." A year later on October 2nd, 2023, the TikToker^[4] posted a video tutorial on how to style yourself like a mob wife for "Mob Wife Winter," garnering over 700,000 views in three months (shown below).

Spread

The aesthetic went viral on TikTok throughout December 2023 and January 2024, with the original sound from @thesweetpaisana October 2023 sound becoming popular in videos where women show off their mob wife aesthetics. On January 6th, 2024, TikToker^[5] @ktrivz posted a video about the aesthetic, claiming the clean girl aesthetic is out and mob wife is in, garnering over 1.6 million views in a week (shown below, left). On January 12th, TikToker^[6] @trovlov posted a video dressing in the aesthetic, garnering over 4.5 million views in a week (shown below, right).

On January 15th, director Francis Ford Coppola submitted a post on Instagram^[9] with the caption " I hear the ‘mob wife aesthetic’ is making a come back…"

On January 17th, TikToker^[7] @mikaylanogueira posted a video doing a mob wife aesthetic makeup tutorial, garnering over 2.3 million views in a day (shown below). That day, The Independent^[8] reported on the aesthetic trend.
