About

Misunderstood Spider (also known as "Misunderstood House Spider" or "Spiderbro") is an advice animal image macro series featuring a macro photograph of a jumping spider sitting on a leaf. The captions typically take the perspective of a benevolent, anthropomorphic spider that is constantly misunderstood and attacked by humans.

Origin

The photograph of the jumping spider (shown left) was initially published on the pop culture blog SodaHead[2] in a post titled "Could you kill these spiders?" on March 1st, 2011. One week later on March 7th, the first Misunderstood Spider image macro was submitted to the /r/AdviceAnimals[1] subreddit with the caption "Crawling on your arm, squish him / just wanted to cuddle" (shown right).

Spread

On March 12th, 2011, Redditor Tron-Gorf submitted a post titled “Misunderstood Spider Can’t Win”[3], which included an image macro with the caption illustrating the spider's humorous encounter with the humans. (shown below, left). The post subsequently reached the front page of the /r/AdviceAnimals subreddit, receiving over 2,000 up votes and 145 comments prior to being archived.

On October 17th, the Internet humor blog Runt of the Web[8] published a post titled "The Sad World of the Misunderstood House Spider", which featured a compilation of notable examples from the series. On October 20th, a Facebook[6] page for "Misunderstood Spider" was created. On November 20th, an image macro with a caption illustrating a human's ungrateful response to a spider killing a wasp (shown above, right) was posted on the Internet humor site 9gag[7], where it received over 10,000 likes within six months. As of June 12th, 2012, the Quickmeme[5] page has accumulated over 900 submissions
