Mista's Tetraphobia refers to a peculiar quirk of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga and anime character Guido Mista, who is severely afraid of number four. Following the launch of Golden Wind arc of the anime in 2018, the character's phobia has become a meme in the anime community and has been a popular subject for referencing and shitposting.

Origin

On April 22nd, 1996, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure chapter 456 was released in Weekly Shonen Jump №19. In the chapter, character Guido Mista was introduced, with the very first scene revealing that Mista has a severe fear of number four.[1] On November 3rd, 2018, the scene appeared in the fifth episode of the Golden Wind arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.[2]

In the weeks following the release of the episode, Mista's fear of number for has been referenced in several memes in /r/ShitPostCrusaders.[3][4]



In anticipation of April 4th, 2019 (04.04), an increased number of memes referencing Mista's tetraphobia appeared in /r/Animemes, /r/ShitpostCrusaders and other anime-related communities. On March 28th, 2019, Redditor Pharah_is_my_waIfu made a post predicting an influx of Mista-related memes in /r/ShitPostCrusaders subreddit, which received over 4,800 upvotes in nine days (shown below).[5]



On April 4th, 2019, a large number of posts referencing the quirk were posted on Reddit.[6] Additionally, /r/animemes subreddit reached 444,444 subscribers on that day, prompting additional posts based on the reference.[7]
