About
MISTAH MERRICKU / Bugs in Anusu / Masuda-posting refers to posts mocking Serebii founder Joe Merrick for defending recent Pokémon games from criticisms they've faced from irate fans. This is mainly expressed by posts roleplaying a fictional situation in which Junichi Masuda (long-time Pokémon director and producer) is getting angry at Merrick. This usually consists of Masuda using a mock Japanese/Asian accent and asking why "MISTAH MERRICKU" (Mr. Merrick) isn't doing a better job of shilling/defending the new Pokemon game. It also usually has Masuda threatening to put "BUGURU IN ANUSU" (bug in his anus).
Origin
The meme originated around E3 2019 when Gamefreak revealed Pokemon Sword and Shield. At the time, there was a huge outcry of criticism, particularly around the lack of a National Dex (not all Pokemon were included initially), lack of quality animations and many low-quality textures. On /vp/, a common line of thought was that a successful company like Game Freak had no excuse to make such low-quality games, and on Twitter, many people shared this angry sentiment, while still many others (including Joe Merrick of Serebii) defended Gamefreak.
On July 29th, 2019, an anonymous user posted the first image in the MISTA MERRICKU format, featuring Joe Merrick nervously on a Skype call with an angry Junichi Masuda, asking "why are they complaining? Intensify your shilling or there will be consequences" in a mock-Asian accent.[1]
Spread
Over the following days, 4chan users began iterating on the meme, later adding the "bugs in anusu" bit.[2] On November 16th, 2019, a user posted a fully voiced copypasta about Masuda kidnapping Joe Merrick, using mocking accents for Merrick and Masuda.[3] The meme has continued seeing use through the release of other Pokémon games, such as Unite and the announcement of Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl and Legends: Arceus.
