'Mirin

About

"'Mirin" is an internet slang term short for "admiring," which was popularized on the BodyBuilding Forums by Zyzz as a way to describe those respectfully viewing the physiques of bodybuilders.

Origin

On August 6th, 2008, BodyBuilding Forums member MayhemMaker submitted a post titled "'Mirin Legs" to the Teen Bodybuilding board, including a photograph of his exposed thighs (shown below).^[1]

Spread

On June 19th, 2010, Urban Dictionary^[6] user comeatmebro1 submitted an entry for "mirin," defining it as "short for admiring" (shown below).

On January 15th, 2011, YouTuber lee uploaded footage of Zyzz saying "U 'mirin bro?" into a web cam (shown below, left). On November 3rd, 2012, YouTuber True Fox uploaded footage of Zyzz on Chatroulette titled "Zyzz – Chat Roulette – Mirin'" (shown below, right). Within five years, the video gained over 340,000 views and 670 comments.

On December 27th, 2012, Urban Dictionary^[5] user James D Perry submitted an entry for the expression "U Mirin' Brah?", defining it as "a rhetorical question, where one fellow male asks another if he's admiring the aesthetics of your body definition, or weight lifting ability." On April 24th, 2016, YouTuber Zyzz Brah & Aesthetics Crew uploaded footage of women reacting to bodybuilder Thorben Sartory on Omegle titled "Girls miring Aesthetics" (shown below).

On Reddit

The /r/bodybuilding subreddit posts "Mirin' Mondays" threads on Monday every week, in which users post photographs of their physiques.^[4] On June 12th, 2014, Redditor 0510521 launched the /r/GirlsMirin^[2] subreddit for photographs of women looking longingly at other men. On January 8th, 2015, the /r/GirlsMirinGirls^[3] subreddit was created for photographs of women looking at other women.
