About
Minecraft Truman Show, also known as Do You Think They Know? or Do You Think He Knows? refers to a trend of Minecraft players recreating the setting of the 1998 film The Truman Show (starring Jim Carrey) with Minecraft villagers. The players make a village underground or in a dome resembling the stadium-sized dome shown in The Truman Show. The TikTok videos, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels following the trend originally surfaced in mid-2024. The creators often added a text caption reading, "Do you think they know?" to emphasize the absurdity of their task as well as the stupidity of the NPC villagers.
Origin
On June 25th, 2024, TikToker[1] @thechosenknight posted a Minecraft video with text overlay reading, "Do you think they know?" The player had recreated the setting of The Truman Show in the game by placing a village underground in a sky-colored dome. The video's TikTok sound[2] used a soundbite from the film in which Truman (played by Jim Carrey) says, "In case I don't see ya, good afternoon." Over 17 days, the video received roughly 3.4 million plays and 404,400 likes (shown below).
Spread
Other Minecraft players recreated the abovementioned video in the following days. For instance, on June 26th, 2024, TikToker[3] @scliffler posted a similar video with text reading, "Do you think they know?" amassing over 38.6 million plays and 4.9 million likes in 16 days (shown below, left). @scliffler also posted the video to YouTube,[4] receiving over 8.1 million views and 689,000 likes.
On June 29th, TikToker[5] @randomnameidk01 posted their own iteration of the trend, receiving roughly 7.1 million plays and 486,200 likes in 13 days (shown below, right).
The trend continued to spread and evolve going into July 2024. For instance, on July 2nd, TikToker[6] @notblazeybois posted a video that instead read, "I think he knows…" showing a Minecraft character escaping the dome. Over 10 days, it received roughly 4.3 million plays and 590,000 likes (shown below).
Viral iterations persisted on YouTube during the same timeframe, such as a Short posted by YouTuber[7] @iyfl on July 2nd, 2024, amassing over 1.8 million views and 146,000 likes in 10 days (shown below).
By July 12th, 2024, the trend's primary TikTok sound[2] had amassed over 2,400 posts.
