About

Minecraft Movie Llama refers to a series of memes, most notably two-panel ironic memes, based on images of a white llama from the trailer for the upcoming film A Minecraft Movie. The format, in which images of the llama looking excited and sneering were captioned akin to the Drakeposting meme format, achieved virality in September 2024.

Origin

On September 4th, 2024, the teaser trailer for the 2024 film A Minecraft Movie, based on the video game Minecraft, premiered on YouTube.[1] In the trailer, a llama is shown calmly grazing on grass as a group of pigmen rushes past it, with the llama briefly changing her calm expression into a surprised one. The trailer (shown below) garnered over 36 million views in two weeks and became the subject of memes as users shared their concerns regarding the quality of the upcoming adaptation.

Later on September 4th, Redditor Geogavyn posted the earliest found two-panel comparison meme based on the scene, using the llama's expressions to convey their reaction to the trailer. The meme (shown below) received over 240 upvotes in the /r/memes[2] subreddit in two weeks.

Spread

On September 5th, 2024, Redditor ligma_hands posted the earliest found ironic meme based on the format, a Reddit Moment meme, which garnered over 2,100 upvotes in two weeks in the /r/LoveForRedditors[3] subreddit (shown below).

On September 9th, 2024, X[4] user @CutieMari_ posted a meme based on the format referencing an older "they say something anti-Catholic" meme and received over 30 reposts and 260 likes in 10 days.

Later on September 9th, X[5] user @vitalhighwire posted an ironic meme about Fortnite utilizing the same structure (shown below). The post received over 2,600 reposts and 41,000 likes in 10 days.

The two-panel format saw more ironic use on X and other platforms in the following weeks.
